The undiscovered joy of Reading

Hi there!! Welcome to a brand new post on LeisureReadz! Hope you all had a great week! Today’s post is about one of my favorite activities or hobbies (Yes, well you can certainly have more than one hobby! :) ) i.e. Reading.

So, let’s get started with it!

The joy of reading is really undiscovered and by this I mean there is so much to read that sometimes time is short. Reading need not be boring. As students in school, most of us might have disliked certain subjects; the texts for those would seem boring and the lectures/ classes never ending. Reading does not only mean dragging yourself through 1000+ page books. Reading can be as light as reading an interesting email. Reading not only improves the knowledge but at times can also be tremendously relaxing and quite entertaining. It refreshes your mind and energizes your brain which improves your visualization capability and analytical thinking. It can be quite stress relieving depending on what you read and what makes you happy. So, grab a cup of your favorite tea or coffee and Happy Reading!

Here are few tips that would definitely help you to discover the joy of reading not only if you are a newbie looking to make a start in reading but also even if you are a pro-reader or someone who just needs a little motivation to start reading again.

1. Just make a start: Anything which needs to be done requires a beginning. So, decide and make a start!

2. Ask a friend you know who reads: To begin with, you could ask people around you for suggestions. This tip would also work for people who have lost touch with reading and could use a little push to restart. Even if you are an avid reader, talking to people around you could give you some ideas for future interesting reads.

3. Do not start with literary legends like Shakespeare (I am assuming that most people would like to start reading in English): I feel that this is a very important tip and needs to follow the previous one. Usually when we ask for ideas, we end up getting loads of suggestions which are mostly good but at times might be beyond our capacities and liking. So, when just starting to read ensure that you do not begin with some hi-fi reads and end up disliking the activity. This brings us to the next tip i.e.-

4. Start with small but trusted and interesting reading materials: It is a good idea to start with something short like a short story or a magazine piece. You could even read a children’s story book for fun. Who knows it might recall some of your fond memories!

5. Commit to reading a little everyday: Just as making a start or deciding is important, committing to it ensures a continuous progress and success. Reading a little consistently would stimulate and motivate.

6. Start reading related to your area of interest: May be you might want to start by reading something your favorite like news piece regarding sports or celebrity, food and fitness, travel reviews etc. Ask yourself what would love to read today and then every day.

7. If possible, carry a book with you, wherever you go: If commute every day, have a book with you. Gadgets these days have made it easier than ever before. Lots of different apps on our smartphones and tab can hold a ton of books in a very small space.

8. Sacrifice your precious 5-10 mins of your TV time for it: We all are tied to clock and always running short on time. So where is the time to read? You might ask. The answer is that there is definitely all the time needed. You could benefit from taking out a little time as much as 5 minutes for reading. Just reduce 5 minutes of your wasted time daily to fit in the habit of reading.

9. Read not only for fun but also for knowledge: Just by reading a random article on Wikipedia almost for a week, you will surely gain new pieces of interesting information.

10.Try reading literature in different languages: If you are a polyglot or at least a bilingual, then you can surely have access to more reading variety as the culture difference between two languages can be felt while reading.

11. Keep variety alive: There are various genres and so many great authors so you can definitely find some interesting books and materials to read. To name a few authors, you could start with Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, Jeffrey Archer, Arthur Hailey, Agatha Christie or Enid Blyton.

I hope you found this Leisure read interesting. I guess by know you must have decided to read something. So, what are you waiting for? Just take out a book on the shelf that you have been meaning to read or search the topic in your favorite search engine to start reading right away. Good Luck!

Till the next post,
Be creative and feel alive!

Cheers,
