Namaste and a warm welcome to you all! How are you? Well, I hope that everyone’s been in the best of their health and mood and that’s precisely why you are back once again for another quickie read on LeisureReadz, your weekend online destination!
Today’s topic is a little offbeat. Huh, do I see a little question there? Spiritual/Philosophical???That’s what is looks from the topic! Oh it’s going to be preachy!!!
Well, my dear reader, let me assure you, that is highly unlikely! It just a simple post which asks you give a little thought on something which can have an impact on the quality of life one is leading.
Recently saw the Oscar winning movie ‘Inside Out’. Amazing animation and an even more amazing concept. It’s about this little girl who moves to SF (that’s San Francisco, btw…) and the representation of her memory shown makes you wonder!! Well, people who have watched this movie might know what I am talking about and for those of you, who haven’t had a chance; please do watch it once! It’s worth watching! So, this post is loosely inspired from the same movie. Today’s post highlights one of the things in our lives that most of us have been ignoring for long i.e. emotional clutter.
First and foremost, any type of clutter isn’t pretty at all. We all know that. Neither we all are thoroughly organized or disciplined all the time. So, it’s true that most of us spend countless hours or even entire weekends at least once in few months getting things organized and in proper order. Yes, even I am no exception to that. Busy and fast paced routines require certain things to take a back seat and procrastination gives a ray of hope in difficult times. How many times we must have thought of postponing a small task just because it does not interest us or we feel like not doing it right now? Hmm... Countless till now... I guess. But we are not going into procrastination details now. Let’s leave it for some other time. Shall we? ;)
To start with, what exactly is mind clutter? The idea of mind clutter is not new. You must have felt it at least quite a couple of times. Then, why does it happen? Our minds work 24x7 and are most definitely filled with lots and lots of not just thoughts but often memories. Different each time. Sometimes old and sometimes new! Sometimes anger and sometimes sad feelings. Every instant, we all have our own unique set of events happening and memories being created, thoughts and ideas being generated. There’s so much getting stored in our brains every second. Lots of info and that too very fast. In this fast paced routines, we forget to slow down.
Thus, mind clutter could easily be the overwhelming number of thoughts and memories playing on the mind screen every instant. Even as I write this post, I too, am thinking of how to write this post even better; what type of post could interest the reader of this post even more and can be helpful.
What are its effects? Thinking gets cloudy if you are not happy. Focus gets an offset so do all your goals. Plus, you seem physically present at any event or place but not mentally because mentally you are still fixated on something that caused you some sort of distress or unhappiness and we all are not able to let go of such things immediately.
Can we avoid it? Yes. Absolutely, it can be avoided well not totally but partially. As some of the factors are not in our control which could like cause stress, anger, resentment etc. The feelings could stay in one’s mind for a long time associated with the particular memory and such feelings return if a similar event occurs. We don’t exactly know as to how this happens but then anything which invokes extreme feelings seems to be registered in the memory as a hard memory.
Recently, I had the privilege to attend a two-day workshop on Self-Empowerment at my workplace. It was a quite informative and interactive session. A point worth noting during the session was that most of the problems we all have are due to this emotional clutter. We may be well organized in our style of working but most of us are not so much sorted when it comes to emotions. During the workshop, we all were taught a very basic technique of mediation which I am happy to share with you all here in this post.
The Technique –
Keep your eyes closed and stay relaxed. You find that even if you are still, your thoughts are never still. They keep on coming in your mind. So, now try to just look at them. No judgements, no logic and no rationalizing at all. Just watch your thoughts as an ‘observer’. You realize after some time that the speed of thoughts coming into your mind reduces and reduces even further. When it is very slow or no thought at all, then you have reached a basic meditative state. At this point, nothing bothers you neither distracts you. Try holding this phase for few minutes or as long as possible initially. You’ll definitely feel an instant surge of positivity in yourself after doing this. And who knows may be even feel lighter in your mind!
So, that’s it for today’s post. Try out the technique and relieve your clutter. Remember, meditation, if practiced regularly is a very powerful technique for reducing, if not completely eliminating the mind clutter!
Till the next post,
Stay Happy and feel the positivity!
